That is why I work almost exclusively on racing Corvairs - ones with cut  
down front (and Rear) springs. Those come out easily and softly, cross  member in 
or out. If you are truly paranoid, tie a rope through the spring and  lower 
control arm, loosely, before you pop the ball joints. - and don't miss the  
pickle fork with the hammer! - Seth Emerson
