One other "ethanol as an additive" note. As many folks have noted with E85  
fuel, ethanol contains less BTUs than the equal amount of gasoline. So as a  
10% portion of your gallon, while it might raise the octane a bit, will reduce  
your gasoline mileage some. Of course, if you don't need the higher octane,  
you are paying extra (twice) for something you don't need. With the banning of  
MTBE as an additive, ethanol has become a regular part of most premium  
fuels, at least in California. This has had an effect on mileage, at least  on cars 
that need it!  - Seth
