I say in the mid to late 70's...

Cars were easier to afford.... easier to work on...yet super reliable......

They handled quite well by this time...and stopped as good.... discs and
swaybars were "normal"

Quality was pretty good and since the cars were NOT cluttered with
addons.....most always worked..... cruise controls... electric windows / doorlocks.

IF your Caddy lost an electric window motor..... every wrecking yard had one
for $10 and it only took 30 minutes to change....

My Olds Cutlass went 294,000 miles with only brakes shocks tuneups...
Engine trans / Diff never faltered....

I did change approx. 6-10 Alt. front bearings in that time.....11
years...but that was a 20 min. job after you knew what to do....

My 78 El Camino went 97k trouble free miles.... towing much of the time...

I bought my LAST new car in 1981.... was over $10,000...have never seen the
time when a NEW cars price made sense..since then...

I've bought many 2-4 year old cars for 50% of new sticker and felt they
were good values....

Example of why I say " Best" about a vehicle.....

89 S-10 Blazer 4.3 TB inj. 107 k trouble free miles.... a battery /
tires and shocks... then it was stolen...

replaced with 93 S-10 Blazer 4.3 " vortec" TPI....... drove it 230k
miles over 9 years... great vehicle also... ran better and got better
mileage than the 89..

but 2 Injector modules 1 intank fuel pump, 3 EGR valves [
electronic] 1 oxygen sensor... 1 tailgage solinoid / lock assy .... radiator ....2
waterpumps..

So to me the 89 was the BETTER vehicle.......
