Since you broke out the soapbox...

I think it more the personality of the newbie to get a warm welcome, or
maybe I was just lucky.

My first convention was Carlisle. I drove my freshly restored Corsa there
only to have it chuck a couple of rob bearings around Dayton. I still made it to
the convention, but the car was on a tow bar. Anyhow, I ran into a couple
guys, Larry Claypool and Ken Hand. I asked them if they could come out to
listen to my popcorn machine. They were very helpful and confirmed the bad rod
bearing. Larry asked if I'd like to be his nav for the rally (that was a fun
ride!). Later on Doug Macintosh asked me to be his nav in the econorun (and we
even trophied) then he loaned me his car for the autocross. Oh yea, I judged
the senior cars in the concours too. After my first convention, I had made
several new good friends.

So what's my point? I "forced" my way into the oldie's group. I wasn't
shunned or belittled, but rather welcomed. Being on VV for some time helped too.

Look WITHIN the group and note that "newbies" don't always get a warm
welcome from the "oldbies".
