But, really this was easy -- the cam was bad and had to come out too, so 
you just punch the lifters out the bottom of the bore and hope the block 
was still good.

And with an original or high mileage Vair engine that may still have 
it's original  or well used cam and lifters, it may also be the bottom 
of the lifter that isn't fitting through the lifter bore instead of the 
varnish build up at the top of the bore. Or, if it is more recently 
rebuilt, maybe it is a motor oil / bad lifter problem ...
