IIRC,  the bolts from the hinge to door need to be loosened to move the 
door  forward and rearward.

Also, moving the door in and out (bolts loose on  post) and leaving the 
door slightly inward of the fender is necessary to  clear the fender on 
some cars.

Worst case? Body shims under the  hinges.

The worst case is when you need "negative spacers".
Negative spacers are also used to increase backspacing on custom wheels.
