    Just how many cylinders does YOUR Corvair engine  have???<GGGG>  Bob 
Helt, on page 273 of his THE CLASSIC CORVAIR  (Eighth Edition) states that doing 
what you suggest will show either 2400 rpm OR  1200 rpm depending on whether 
the battery charger has a FULL wave or a HALF  wave rectifier in it.  Maybe 
yours has a THREE QUARTER wave rectifier in  it?
