Australia's road toll over the past 40 years just continues to drop while
our population continues to grow. Currently less that 400 people die each year
on Australian roads. And remember Australia is the same size as continental
U.S.A. We drive long distances in Australia.

Come on U.S.A. wear those seat (safety) belts and fit them to vehicles that
don't have them.

Granted that the land of Oz is the same size as the original 48
States--isn't most of the population concentrated in a few relatively large cities
(Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth) and due to the high price of petrol
(even though economical Japanese cars are very common there) long-distance
travelling done mostly by air or by rail? I seem to recall that the Melbourne
rail station was the busiest in the world--but that was a number of years ago.
