<VV> Road to Darien

All: The story of the "Road to Darien" quest is told in Automobile Quarterly
Vol 1 #3. The idea was to drive three ordinary passenger cars (plus support
pick-up trucks) from the Panama Canal to border of Columbia SA, thus
"completing" the Pan-American Hwy route.

Only problem was the 250 miles was across a (then) yet to be explored jungle
without so much as having a cow path to follow. They made it, but just
barely. According to the AQ story, all three cars made it, but they look
like real beat up in the photos.

You could also look in the Communique for the coverage of the CPF session at
the Daytona Convention in '00, as one or two of the guest were on the trip.
There might be some additional info info there. I was at the session, but
do not remember if they said anything about what happened to the cars, as my
mind was on the interview I was to do with Jerry Thompson.

I don't know anything about Corvairs in Bolivia.

Historically Yours,
                   James Rice

I had asked Hemmings if they had further information or research on "the
Bolivia" car. Their response is below. I think that you might get a kick
out of it - as I did.

In the early 60's Chevy made a couple movies about the reliability of
Corvair. As I recall, one was called "Daring the Darien" and the other was
"From Here to There" On one of those trips one of the cars was abandoned.
Could this Bolivia car possibly have been the one left behind? I have no
idea how to resears such a thing. Maybe you do?
