I'd agree.  I don't know if there were any running changes to the  hinges, 
but I have cleaned out the hinge area inside the post on almost all the  cars 
I've owned and several cars belonging to friends and the reinforcing area  
behind the hinges was the same on '65 and '66.  There really is a lot of  strength 
built into the design.  I would clean up everything  inside--especially the 
"shelf" area above the hinge anchors inside the pillar  that collects the dirt, 
leaves and other stuff--paint it (or spray it with a  rust eater and then 
spray it with a good oil based paint (I used Rustoleum's  fish oil based rusty 
metal primer to start).  That will stop the rust until  you can do the cosmetic 
repairs.
