Which is exactly what he is suggesting, but all of his work is done on 164ci
cranks.  Are there any SAE papers that pertain to the long stroke cranks?

Bob and Joel, the SAE papers state that the early standard crank was carbon 
SAE 1045 steel and the turbo cranks were chromium SAE 5140 steel. Probably 
all late cranks were the chromium SAE 5140 steel but not all were nitrided, 
as we know.
