Bill,

Welcome to Corvairdom!

I'd highly recommend you get a Corvair Basic's Manual, it even comes free
with a CORSA Membership
http://www.corvair.org/csapromos.php

The Corvair IS the cat's meow.

Gas heaters were optional. After the first couple of years most cars were
bought with the factory direct air heater (although it could be deleted as
an option if you were cheap). An air cooled motor typically operates in the
300* range, and it's cooled with.... AIR. So why not take that hot air and
pipe it into the cabin? Makes sense, eh?!

You should get TONS of heat from a factory direct air heater. The only
thing you need to be aware of is that the system has to be properly
maintained. If the exhuast donuts are allowed to deteriorate you can draw
carbon monoxide in the cabin, definitely not good for one's health.

Check out the Basic's Manual, you won't regret it. You'll find many of the
authors of that book are residents of this list!

Regards,
Joel

Complete Newbie here......please be kind.

I have a real interest in Corvairs. I've had many special interest old
cars, and now a cool little Chevy with decent mileage is sounding like the
cat's meow.

About these gas heaters......Were they optional? I live in ATL, and don't
need a lot of heat. but do need a little.

Can someone spell out how 'vairs were heated, or point me to a technical
resource?

Thanks! Great site!
