Good piece, Warren.

You are a supporter. Some people are not. As others have said, some are
comfortable to mooch off from others. A supporter doesn't.

I'll bet you put your offering in the plate at church, not just because
of what you get out of it, but so that others may get it too. Same
thing.

Years ago, I belonged to NHRA. I paid my dues for several years, even
though I didn't drag race. But I loved going to the drags and wanted to
support NHRA, so they would remain viable. Same thing with Corvair
clubs. We have members who pay their dues and only get the newsletter,
but they want to support the club and to keep up with what the club is
doing. But they never come to meetings and may not even have a Corvair
anymore. As CORSA members age, I'll bet there are a lot of Corvair
folks that pay their CORSA dues mostly just to support the
organization, remembering all the good times they had.

I missed our club meeting Tuesday night, something I rarely do. But I
had an opportunity to go to a YWCA dinner where several women in the
community were honored, one of them being a woman I've known and worked
with in a volunteer capacity for over twenty-years. I had a couple of
glasses of Merlot, some real fancy chicken, and had a nice time. Most
importantly, I was supporting my friend by being there and the YWCA by
paying my sixty-five dollars to attend their dinner.

It all reminds me of paying taxes to support schools. My three children
went all through school; elementary, middle and high school, and got a
good education that allowed them to go on to good colleges and become
productive, successful adults. I cheerfully pay my tax bill every year
and would vote for any tax increase to support the schools. Somebody
else paid taxes so my children could get an education, I'll do the same
for children yet to be born. Some don't see it that way, they say, "Why
should I pay school taxes, I don't have any kids in school!", or, "Why
should I vote for more taxes for schools? I don't have any kids in
school!".

Some are supporters, some are not.
