What Harry said.  Easiest repair is to replace the whole starter and  send 
the old one back as a core.  If you have the time to putter you can  pull the 
solenoid and see if the disc is mounted on a threaded shaft, remove it,  reverse 
and reassemble--but most discs that I've seen recently can't be  removed.
 
As far as the Land Rover is concerned you might try putting a plugged light  
bulb on an extension cord below the battery to increase it's capacity when  
things really get cold.  Same thing for the Corvair's battery as  well.  And a 
higher battery current means the starter doesn't have to work  as hard and 
there is less chance of overheating the wiring.  Higher  voltage=less current and 
visa versa.
