Ah yes, I've miss-spoken myself.  The wire that need the diode is the light
gauge wire that goes to the idiot light.  You have a choice of two wires,
the fat one that provides the output to the battery and the other one.  You
want the other one.

Why is the sense wire of a one wire alternator going through the ignition  
circuit? It should go ONLY to the battery. 
 
And on more conventional alternator circuits, the idiot light connects to  
the ACC terminal through the lamp. Again, not to the ignition circuit.

It sounds like the P.O. installed a one wire alternator to  upgrade the
charging system.  The alternator is back feeding the car  via its sense
wire.
You need to install a pretty fat diode in this wire to  block the back
circuit.  Radio Shack has several such diodes to choose  from.  BTDT
