back before i had my new 64 corvair ,oils were not as advanced as now. if
you put a gallon of dirty black oil in a glass jug it would settle and become
"clean" after a few days time. soooooo i had a 2 gallon can fastened to the
wall with a spigot soldered in the side about 3 inches up. it would
"reclaim" oils in a week or less. hate to think what the lube quality was .i bet
several garages did the same thing. if you put all your oil drainings into a 50
gallon drum and took from a few inches from the bottom it would appear clean.
lots of farmers saved by doing this. your newer oils will not let the crud
settle out. that is the improvement in technology showing. the damaging
particles will be captured by the now better filters.
if the idle circuit is not working on later carbs sometimes you can blast it
thru the idle needle and get it going again..the fact that it happened after
doing other work on the engine makes me wonder if a base gasket or crossover
pipe hose is leaking? or just linkage adjustment (syncronization?).but i
bet on carb removal and rebuild with boiling it out. might better do both at the
 same time..
just my ramblins..
regards, tim colson
