Hey Tim, And of course there are those that will chime in that they've
used 140's in their FC's and everything is fine. I have no reason to
doubt them. The point is, everything needs to be put into perspective.

If you have 2 Corvair engines, a 110hp and a 140hp that are identical
so far as their condition is concerned, and you put each in an identical
2 FC's, what will PROBABLY be the outcome?

The 140hp will PROBABLY not last as long. That's because 140hp engines
have a greater tendency to run hotter and drop valve seats than a 110
engine. That's just simply a fact. Does it mean that you will almost
certainly lose the engine to a dropped valve seat? Not at all. If
certain precautions are understood and taken, you may get good life out
of a 140 in an FC. BUT THE FACT REMAINS it will be more likely that the
motor will not hold up as well as a 110. That's really all anyone should
be saying.

These are facts that should be kept in mind when making an engine
choice. If you simply want more hp and/or the "gee-whiz" of having a 140
in your FC, then go for it - But do it with the full understanding that
it MAY be more difficult to get the same reliability as a 110 in the
same application.

This was on an engine rebuilt about 3,000 miles before this happened. This on the way to the Corvair Palm Springs meet in 2007. Now I am running the same engine but with 1965 95HP heads. To and from Ventura I averaged 21 mpg but more importantly it was very reliable (about 1900 miles in 10 days) except for my fan bearing coming up out of the top cover. Sorry but I am done with 140's. I want reliability.
