This is also a sign of a small exhaust leak beginning.  In my  experience it 
is usually at the donut gasket between a manifold "log" and the  exhaust pipe, 
or, less frequently, at the exhaust log and the exhaust stack from  the 
engine.  You post indicated that your work had cured the problem and if  so great, 
but if it comes back try taking a 9/16ths box wrench to the exhaust  manifold 
to exhaust pipe studs on the noisy side and see if that doesn't cure  the 
problem.  Such noises are more pronounced under load.
