That's why my car batteries are usually plugged  into a "Battery Tender" that 
keeps the batteries at 13.5 volts - just enough to  keep them fully charged 
WITHOUT electrolyzing the water content of the acid  and requiring frequent 
addition of more water.  Lead-Acid batteries lose  about 10% to 20% of their 
charge each month so it doesn't take too long for  the battery to become sulfated 
and forever DEAD.  After 11-1/2 years I  finally had to replace the original 
GM factory battery in my TransSport.
