Frank is absolutely right about the battery reading zero meaning a defective battery....The BCI (Battery Council International) standards for the ratings on batteries at zero degrees require that the voltage doesn't drop below 7 volts during the time of the test at the rated amps draw of XXX amps on the battery.   At Delco Remy during the 1970s we adopted a test that pulled over 2000 amps out of batteries and monitored the voltage for a couple of seconds to determine the quality of every battery going out the door....Get a good battery and then proceed to determine what else if anything is your problem
