I recently exchanged e-mails with an old friend who is finishing up his
degree at Virginia Tech. Here's some of his e-mail: "My name is
Michael Whitley, and I am Rodney Whitley’s oldest son. He was a member
of this chapter and president for a while during the 80s and early 90s.
In short, I am finishing up my Masters at Virginia Tech and have really
gotten the Corvair itch, I suppose it was hereditary (or could have
been from being slung around at such a young age in Dad’s ’63 Spyder
during quite a few autocrosses down that way)."

The Whitleys moved to North Carolina several years ago. Michael was
just a little boy when they lived here, but he grew up around Corvairs
and now he wants one. He went on to say. "If you all know of any
Corvairs (preferably a late model coupe) that are trying to find a new
home, please let me know at this e-mail account. Currently, I am in
Blacksburg, VA, but I wanted to make sure that I asked the folks who
knew me from way back when before I really looked all that much
elsewhere."

"As far as the Corvair goes, I would really like to find a late model,
four-speed that is in decent shape. I'd really like to use it as a
daily driver that I can spend some occasional time on to take care of
mechanical maintenance and possibly teach myself a little about body
work. Preferably, I would like to find something that is not in any
dire need of an overhaul."

When Rod lived here, he and some other guys rented one of those big
metal buildings where they stored and worked on Corvairs. It was always
simply referred to as, "the building." Michael added, "I can guarantee
you that I really miss the days when I spent hours hanging around that
shop in Piedmont propped up on Dad's rampside to his '61 pickup
drinking Root Beer. Now days, it is much more often me cramped up in
my lab analyzing data until I feel like I can barely see."

So there you are. We're always talking about getting more young people
involved, here's our chance. If you have something that might interest
Michael, e-mail him at: mwhitley at vt.edu
