If memory serves, Standard Oil was broken up by antitrust laws in the early
part of the last century. Standard Oil of New Jersey became Esso--now Exxon
in the US, but still Esso overseas. Standard Oil of Indiana was Amoco--now
part of BP and Chevron (formerly SoCal) was Standard Oil of California. There
were probably others, but those are the only ones I remember. And Exxon
purchased/merged with Mobil about ten years ago.
