<VV> Overflow fix for stock Rochester carbs

All,
I've seen good write ups on the overflow fix for Rocheseter carbs, using a L shaped copper pipe.  Is there any reason a straight pipe going from original opening in bowl side of cover to about 2" straight up?  I don't see where having the tube extend all the way across the top of the bowl makes much difference.
