Ah !  There's the scam !  Now I get it !

First you have to send the scammer money to get the check !

That part was not in the original description of the scam - I wondered
how their scam would work, if they just sent out checks to everyone?  

Anyone dumb enough to send a stranger money first deserves to lose it !

To summarize PT Barnum, "Fools are fair game !"

Like the guy from England who wanted me to pay his account to ship my
Corvair to England.  Right !

If the bogus cashier check comes back it comes out of your account!  The
scam is that you send money before the bogus check bounces.  If it is an
out of country cashier check it can take months before it bounces.
There is no free lunch.
