 That's just examples of ignorance!  Many NEW cars came from  the factory 
with rubber hose near coils, distributors, etc..
 
NOT CORVAIRS!    IIRC   ALL  Factory  Engines have NO  rubber hose IN the 
engine bay.  Someone has  replaced STEEL  with rubber on those cars..
 
The one I hate... and change often.. the rubber connector near the  starter / 
exhaust...  BAD!!  IMO
 
Then you add the Electric fuelpump IN the Bay???   Death  Wish!  although it 
works fine... just a known trouble spot.  I also  advocate mounting on top of 
the Diff.  Better,  but to close to the  exhaust for me!
