I understand that they used it simply because it "looked foreign enough
(spelled Russian)" to fool the uneducated public.

My, how people forget. A good reason for getting our Corvairs out so that
the public can see them, like at car shows, cruise-ins, club tours, etc.
The down side is that if the public was more aware of the look of Corvairs,
maybe our cars wouldn't be called upon for such movie duties.
