I succeeded in sealing my Rochester carb float! Thanks for everyone who offered advice. I had to do some experimenting before I got it right, but here is what worked:

- Leak test by dunking in hot water and watching for bubbles
- Drilled 1/16" hole in the float
- Shook the gas out
- Heated with a hair dryer to drive off the remaining fumes
- Applied flux
- Tinned the end of my 30 Watt soldering iron (I used electrical solder)
- Applied the iron to the float until the solder flowed
- Cooled down and rechecked for leaks
