Try this:

If you are really unsure, you could also pull off the right valve cover and 
watch the motion of the valves on # 1 cylinder.

You've not had the distributor out, right?  By now you should have a pretty 
good idea of where #1 likely is on the distributor.  So, pull the cap and 
watch the rotor in conjunction with watching the valves.

I think you might have a hard time stopping the engine at the right spot 
using the starter.
