One note - the distributor shaft bottom end meshes with two different  
parts, the oil pump and the cam gear.  If the distributor is going  
back into an undisturbed engine, then you're correct that it can only  
go in one of two ways.  *But* if the wires have been moved around,  
the slot for the oil pump will no longer align.  The important one to  
have in alignment is the crank gear, so you can - very gently - use a  
long screwdriver to turn the oil pump and get it lined up.
