You're thinking of the 411/412 cars, which were Type 4s. The Type 34 
Karmann Ghia is a Type 3, which has a lot in common with the 
Fastback/Squareback cars. .

Would that be the 911/912 models? Had a 912 once. "Big" 4door, fully
automatic trans, gas heater, quad headlights. Nice car, and somewhat
resembled the LM Corvair in the front.
