Their hit on the Pacer was (basically) that it was not really small, 
economical, nice to drive, etc... it basically had all of the "bad" big 
car attributes wrapped up with all the "bad" small car attributes in a 
badly compromised package with none of the positive aspects of either... 
without even the benefit of pleasing styling.... in summary a 
(relatively) cramped ugly car that drove poorly and still got horrible 
mileage.

Essentially the way the US has always built "small" cars (save for the 
Corvair). I'm paraphrasing (having already archived last month's C&SC 
mag in a fit of spring cleaning the office) but as I recall that was the 
gist.

The UK didn't get the huge onslaught of Japanese cars as early as we 
did, so were spared from many of the worst ones. In exchange, they got a 
lot of the really bad European cars that we didn't...
