i still like mechanical pumps best.
when i replace with a new one , i loosen the screws and push the pushrod in  
as far as i can , then retighten. so far i have done well doing this , as  
suggested years ago by an old time parts guy.     i do it to  any new diaphragm 
type pumps.
in fact i think one rebuilder used to put a note in the box to do this  
before installing pumps.
