<VV> Leaking Fuel Pump

We have a 66 Monza purchased last September.  It has been converted to  
an electric fuel pump and the original pump and plumbing are still on  
the engine.  I haven't taken anything apart as yet.  Is it typical to  
remove the internals from the mechanical pump or what is normally  
done?  The mechanical pump is leaking, should I take it apart and  
replace the gaskets or what else would you suggest?
