I would certainly take issue with the above statement.  I've replaced 
batteries in any number of vehicles with generator charging systems and 
do not recall ever polarizing the regulator because of that.  Never 
heard of polarizing the generator, even when switching polarities in 
previously positive ground BMC products to accomodate more modern radios.

'Polarizing the regulator' is a service one performs when installing a 
new unpolarized regulator, or changing the polarity of the charging system.
