<VV> No Stop Lights

The stop lights on my '64 Monza convertible do not work. The tail lights work as well as the back-up lights. I ran a wire from the brake light switch, at the brake pedal, to the light wire at the rear lights and the stop lights will then work. I have tail lights, stop lights and turn signals with the wire hooked up. Someone told me that the problem may be in the steering column with the turn signal switch. Someone else told me to check the plug in the engine bay to see if there was corrosion, I did this and there did not seem to be any. I know that the turn signal switch housing is a little loose on the steering column. I applied the brake and "wiggled" the housing without any change to the lights. This problem began on a weekend Club sponsored trip to Luray Caverns 2 years ago. We ran the extra wire in the motel parking lot at that time. I would like to get rid of the wire and put the car on the road again. Any suggestions to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
John Johnson
