 Agreed, for the garden variety infrared thermometer (the laser is simply for aiming purposes, it has nothing to do with temperature measurement itself), is more than close enough for these purposes.

No, dead wrong as the laser thermometer is looking for total emissivity 
reading and the black paint thing only applies to spectral or solar 
emissivity.  We do not have a sun in the engine.

Good idea but most laser thermometers do not have adjustable emmisitivity
and thus the item being measured needs to be dark or black for accurate
reading. Paint a THIN coat of black paint on a small spot on ea area you
wish to measure if they are reflective aluminum. Errors can be quite high.
