 If it's on the bench, mark the pinion with a magic marker, and put an index line on the case. Grab both U joint yokes, turn them in unison, EXACTLY one turn, and count how many times the pinion turns. 3.27 times, it's a 3.27. 3.55 times, it's 3.55. Meaning, if it's about 3-1/4 turns, it's the former, if it's about 3-1/2 turns, it's the latter. If it's nearly 4 turns, you got yerself a 3.89 there...

determine the ratio...
