<VV> pilot bushing problems

My 63 Spyder is on its 2nd pilot bushing and this one also lasted only  
about 1,000 miles before "squalling" when just starting to engage  clutch while 
in reverse, just when its cold.  It doesn't do it  when hot, or when taking 
off in first.  It is the Clark bushing, and i'm  wondering what keeps going 
wrong.  I added a bit of grease at installation,  but does it need it, or 
some other lube?  Any ideas to get them to last  longer??
