<VV> pilot bushing problems

You got to soak the pilot bushing in motor oil for a week or put it on your
thumb, pour it full of oil and then press down with your finger, on the oil
until it comes out of the pours on the outside.  Usually you will need to
fill it up a couple of times.  Grease is a no-no.

My 63 Spyder is on its 2nd pilot bushing and this one also lasted only  
about 1,000 miles before "squalling" when just starting to engage  clutch
while 
in reverse, just when its cold.  It doesn't do it  when hot, or when taking 
off in first.  It is the Clark bushing, and i'm  wondering what keeps going 
wrong.  I added a bit of grease at installation,  but does it need it, or 
some other lube?  Any ideas to get them to last  longer??
