Ken, the first one was AXLE failure... not bearing..

Nope ... Inner race stayed on axle & the outer stayed with the control arm, all the rollers were missing. The car felt like the LR tire had run over a brick when the tire / wheel exited the wheelhouse. The axle was intact but the inner snout was out of the differential. The car's momentum continued to keep it rolling on all four wheels.

The second is Weird... how would you drive a car like that without FEELING the
vibrations?

Only thing I can think of is a bad press fit... allowing the axle to work out...

Second time, same as the first! Except the tire was cut on the way out of the wheelhouse. It happens quickly, but you could not drive it at all once it happened because the axle snout pulled out of the differential resulting in no forward drive. Before the bearing failure there was NO unusual noise nor vibrations. The tire made a big pop and then the flat tire shook the car. This time the front brakes stopped the car in its tracks.

I've seen too many EMS driven home with no rollers left! but still had the axle intact.

My ex-wife had a bearing failure on her 63 convertible. It started squealing several miles from home, bad enough that she decided to turn around and go back. Before she made it the wheel also moved outward enough to pull the snout out of the differential and the brake drum from the brake shoes. She coasted along the shoulder to a stop and was able to jack the car up and push the wheel back in then _limp_ home.

I saw this happen to someone in a 62 I was following on the street years ago. I do not know if the bearing made noise before it failed. The stop lights came on immediately but the car did not slow. I turned right at my corner so I do not know how far they went before stopping.
