Bruce, history has shown that the corvair engine bottom end is extremely
resilient, if a few precautions are taken. One guy I know has a 110 in a 65,
I think, automatic, with 137K on it and never been apart, still runs great,
he says.

Since the corvair engine runs so hot, cheap oils are not recommended,
however, as a teen and in college I put 200K miles on a corvair engine using
a std 10-30 Havoline oil, but then the oils had the ZDDP in them. Not any
more.

I did overhaul the engine once for a broken cam gear, but just honed the
barrels, did the valves and guides, and put in new std rings and std
bearings, and new lifters.

Use a good synthetic oil of the right viscosity. Keep the oil clean. Make
sure the oil has the required ZDDP in it, or add it.
I'm currently running a full Synthetic Shell Rotella T 5 w40 (Wally's World
carries it) which is actually developed for the non-catyletic converter
Diesel engines. I sent a message to Shell to see if is was appropriate for
our flat tappet engines and they replied that it has the required ZDDP.
Many use Amsoil or Mobile 1, both excellent products. Some Castrol. The key
is to use a good oil with ZDDP.
I also checked my oil pump's health and for clearances.

There is an excellant article on oils by Richard Widman. Here is the url.
 http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Corvair_oil.pdf

The oil pressure light goes out (at abt 7 psi, I think) before I can release
the ignition switch, and my car starts fast. With a synthetic oil in between
everything that may want to touch, the opportunity to do so is very small.
Hope this helps
