Does the knocking bear any relation to wheel speed?  That might indicate
u-joints or a spider gear missing a tooth.

What about volume and/or pitch?

Is the engine moving - say rocking at all.  Could something external to the 
engine be making contact with it - creating the rapid hammer sound?
