<VV> Gulftane

Perhaps nothing more than a misinterpretation. It is true that Corvair
engines (any HP) don't need lead in the gasoline. But, (as Matt indicated)
pump gas in the '60s was pretty much all leaded. That is the grey stuff in
the oil pan the first time you take one off of an old engine.

But, to say the engines were designed to use unleaded gas seems sort of
backwards. They CAN use unleaded gas because of the hardened valve seats -
which are there because of the aluminum heads. So, the advantage which
accrues to us owners driving Corvairs on today's gas is that we do not have
to add a lead substitute like the owners of some other makes must do. That,
or buy the "old fashion" REGULAR or EYTHEL (both with lead) gas if you can
even find it.

If memory serves (it might not), in the '50s we used to buy (by the gallon
container) something called "white gas" which I believe was unleaded for use
in the lawn mower. Why, I don't know - because that was what dad said to
do. Had to walk two miles (uphill both ways - seemed like) carrying that
can. <GRIN> Well, it WAS full on the way back.

Later, JR
