Back in the day of the Corvair and for some time afterwords all those in GMs many engineering departments wore white shirts and ties.  Those in shop areas of engineering also wore the shop jackets shown in the pictures.  In the early 70s pastel color shirts ... with ties ... came into favor.  Managers held to the white shirts for a while.  Then dark shirts without ties including the managers.  Today, tee shirts and blue jeans with holes in the knees are acceptable, at least to some.
