GMs many  engineering departments wore white shirts and ties.  Managers held 
to the  white shirts for a while.  Then dark shirts without ties including 
the  managers.  
 
It was said that - back in the day - you could walk right into the GM Tech  
center if you dressed in dark pants, short sleeve white shirt with a 
narrow,  dark tie, and held a clip board in hand, and looking serious.  Machine  
readable badges surely put the final nail in that scam.
