Tony - I have that one.  No contest!
 
GM engineers knew that the Corvair owners wouldn't bother getting the  
donuts in the exhaust system checked and, sooner or later, CO gas would be  
exiting into the heater ducts. By using neoprene O-rings, they assured that oil  
would soon leak onto the exhaust logs, causing smoke to be pulled into the  
heater systems. That smoke, when pulled into the car interior, would make 
the  driver open the window to get rid of the smoke, which, of course pulled 
out the  CO as well, saving the life of the driver and passengers. It is all 
so simple,  especially when you are looking for (auto)motives!  - Seth
