The headlights shone brightly and idiot lights came on when the key was
turned.

It's on its way to the repair shop. The mechanic has worked on Corvairs and
other older cars in the past. This problem shouldn't be Corvair unique
anyway. Frustrates me to shell out the $$ when it's a problem I'm confident
I could diagnose (with all our your help) and repair if it was in my garage
full of tools and parts.
