Harry, I think Mark is saying the lifter bore is so worn the oil won't pump
up the lifter, but I would try another *new* lifter (don't swap them around
if they have been run on the cam lobes) before thinking the block is worn.
If the lifter makes suction when it is pulled out or pushed in, there is no
problem in that area.

I've put 180K miles on one of these engines, with only ring and valves and
bearings  as needed, and there was never a problem with lifter bore, and I
used a 1/4 turn valve lash all the time.
