I was interested in adding an EI to my 62 sedan. Looked it up in the
Clarks
catalog and it tells me EI is only for late models (164 CI). I was
wondering why this would be ? Is it a difference in the distributor, if
so
can I swap a LM distributor into an EM and use it ? Or is there some
other
reason that eludes me.
TIA

Rex - The Pertronix "Ignitor" Model 1162B will fit any 1962-later Corvair
distributor. The 60-61 had a unique design, not common to many other cars.
But the 62 style is common to many other GM in-line 6-cylinder models and
was used until the HEI ignition became standard in 1974. The Pertronix kit
also includes a new "Point plate" although no points are mounted on it.
Replacing this plate gets you away from some of the worst wear locations in
the Corvair distributor. You should still check the hole in the vacuum
advance arm, sometimes they get elongated in wear. Replace it if it is not a good
fit onto the "point" plate pin. If your distributor is the original one
for your engine, just clean up the spring/weight area when you have it open
and use the same components with the electronic trigger.
