 having worked on VW engines and 4 and 6 cylinder air cooled Porsche engines, I can say, with NO hesitation, the Corvair engine has NOTHING in common with ANY German air cooled engine!! I wish it did, things like a fully enclosed crankcase with no top, bottom, or end covers, etc.

It was designed by Ed Cole, who also designed the small block Chevy V-8.
And since the SB has been around since '55, I'd say that puts the Corvair
in good company.
